What is "Single Kitten Syndrome"?
This term is used to describe behavior that can develop in a kitten that grows up without the interaction of another cat/kitten during it's first 6 months. Kittens, while they are fun to watch play, are actually learning important interaction skills from their playmates. The biting, scratching and yowling that occurs during playing is how the kittens learn when their behavior is too rough. Cats that grow up are their own can become too aggressive when playing as these boundaries weren't established. Human companions cannot duplicate this play, it needs to occur within their own species. It is cute when a kitten attacks your feet or your hair, not cute when an adult cat does this and draws blood. Life skills, the most important being good litter box habits as also learned and reinforced by their playmates. Cats/kittens can also become "bored" when left home alone, this can lead to destructive behavior such as scratching furniture, whereas if they had a buddy, they would play with each other instead. Many rescue groups/shelters will not adopt kittens (under 6 months) on their own because of all the kittens returned for aggresive or inappropriate behaviors. Two cats are not much more work than one, and allows your felines companionship you are away from home. Pixiebobs will still bond as deeply with their humans even with a feline companion at home.
